Megan Wolery Interviews
Megan Wolery, Aspiring Singer/Songwriter
from Lima, OH
Megan Wolery (18) has been involved in music from an early age. A singer and multi-instrumentalist, Megan recently became serious about developing her songwriting skills.

Lilac Writer (LW): You obviously have talent and experience as a singer, but what got you interested in songwriting?

Megan Wolery (Megan): I started writing songs when I was in 7th grade, just for fun, and most of them made no sense at all! It wasn't until the start of this year that I picked up the pen and started writing more mature songs (that actually made sense!). I never thought I was very good at it, but the more I wrote, the better I got, and the more my friends started to like them. I think it was making that transition to college that sparked some new song ideas.

LW: Have you been in bands or other kinds of music groups?

Megan: I have been involved with my school band from 5th grade up until the end of high school. In high school, I was in the marching band, pep band, jazz band, and symphonic band; then I played violin in our area youth orchestra, too. I have been singing and playing with groups since I can remember!

LW: I read that you recently went to Greece. Do you get song ideas from travel or changing your environment?

Megan: Yes, I went to Greece with my godparents to visit the family for a month. It was amazing and beautiful! I did get some ideas when I went over there. I think that changing my environment really does help inspire songs and allows me to reflect on where I was before. For instance, a song I wrote with another songwriter during college is about going back to where I'm from and how much I missed home.

LW: It is pretty apparent that Taylor Swift is one of your music influences. Are there other artists you can point to that have inspired you?

Megan: Yes, Taylor has been a big influence because she's my age; she had a dream to be a country singer and worked hard to make it a reality. I think that was the point where I said to myself "Ok, now that you're in college, go do what you've always wanted to do." I have been inspired by all types of artists... I think it's important to listen to all types of genres. From classical to rock, pop to country, and rap to world music, I love it all. Some of my big influences throughout my life have been ABBA, Elton John, The Dixie Chicks, Faith Hill, Martina McBride, Shania Twain, and Madonna.

LW: Tell us a little bit about your songwriting process. Where do you get your ideas?

Megan: For me, a melody usually pops into my head first. But lyrics usually come to me during conversations, from billboard ads, even from people watching. I try to make every song different: one song could be about a boy, the next could be about friendship, another could be about a hard day at work. I like variety in songs.

LW: Do your songs go through phases of re-writes?

Megan: Definitely! I have never had a song that was complete in one draft. I think that it's good to go through a song once or twice to make some changes. I usually play my second or third draft to my friends and hear what they have to say.

LW: When songwriting or even picking cover songs to sing, what do you look for in a song? What makes a song great?

Megan: The ones that are extremely personal grab my attention. Making sure that your song can reach out to people is so important! One thing I do when writing songs is talking to people - find out what's on their mind. There is a song I'm almost done with that is about things that make people sad like not finding love or losing a family member. It's okay to be sad and someone out there cares about them, so everything will be alright in the end. It comes from stories and lives of my close friends, and so far, it seems to be one of the best songs I've written!

LW: You have been using Lilac Writer for a while now. What role does Lilac Writer play in your songwriting process?

Megan: Lilac Writer plays a very important role in my songwriting process. I have notebooks full of ideas that I've quickly scribbled down, but with Lilac Writer, I can start a song, throw some ideas in there, have a rhyming dictionary (which is one of my favorite part about the program!) and finish a song very quickly. Everything is organized and it's so easy to use. I love it!

LW:Have you used the collaboration features of Lilac Writer for distance collaboration or co-writes?

Megan: Yes! Actually, a songwriter I collaborated with told me about the site, so I started using it, mainly to collaborate with him; I liked it so much, I use it all the time now!

LW: When you are working on a lyric are working on the melody and chords, or do you set the lyric to music after it is written?

Megan: I try to write as much lyrics as I can, but I usually set a melody and chords to the chorus first, and then do a pre-chorus, and then work on the melody and chords for the verses.

LW: You mentioned you have done some demo recording on your computer. What equipment or software do you use?

Megan: I use GarageBand to record demo work. I don't have any big high-tech equipment yet, so I just use my MacBook.

LW: Have you worked with co-writers on any of your original material?

Megan: Yes, I have worked with two very good songwriters on some songs. It was important for me to work with songwriters for a while, just to get the hang of things. Also, I like to hear other peoples' opinions on songs.

LW: Do you try out new material for friends or at open mic events?

Megan: Of course! My friends are the reason I've been writing songs and working on recording. They love to hear me play and sing, especially new material. I do play at open mic nights and usually throw out a few new songs to get some feedback from people I don't know.

LW: What are your near term goals for your music or and current projects you have in the works?

Megan: Well, my short terms goals are to write 10 more songs by the end of the year and maybe record 5 of them for another demo CD. I know it doesn't seem like much, but I always end up having more things to work on and accomplish in the mean time.
